DESERT TUNE (f, 2, Street Cry {Ire}–Sahara Gold {GSW, $248,742}, by Seeking the Gold), a half-sister to Better Lucky, MGISW, $1,278,950, rallied to victory in her second career start on Opening Day of the Belmont Fall Championship meet. The chestnut closed to finish sixth after a slow start in her 5 1/2-panel debut at Saratoga Aug. 9 and was let go at odds of 9-1 for this first try at an extended distance. She secured position tracking the pace in fourth as Shayna Lady (American Lion) showed the way through fractions of :23.70 and :47.44 and angled out turning for home. Asked for more in midstretch, she moved to the front in tandem with first-timer Tapless (Tapit) and kicked clear to a two-length score over that rival. The win completed a rolling double for this owner-trainer combination after Nothingbutthetruth (Medaglia d’Oro) annexed the previous race. The winner, whose second dam is GISW Desert Stormer, is also a half to Sahara Heat (A.P. Indy), GSW, $170,858. Sahara Gold produced a colt by Ghostzapper this year and was bred back to Hard Spun. Lifetime Record: 2-1-0-0, $45,332. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
